Share your favorite Woody Herman recordings and stories!
Being from Wisconsin, I’ve heard many Woody Herman stories and played many of the chart’s his band played. It’s really interesting how the band evolved over the years, moving with the times but featuring some really great arrangers. I tend to favor those later, more progressive years with arrangers such as Alan Broadbent, Tony Klatka, Bill Stapleton. Here are some of my favorites!
Total energy! Though I never understood why I would get applause for playing the piccolo solo up top.
Woody’s band did an album side with great arrangements of Steely Dan tunes. Unfortunately they haven’t been properly digitized and only exist in vinyl.
Rock ballad, featuring bassoon and alto flute! Though I’ve played it many times on alto sax, the bassoon part was intimidating so we never attempted the original instrumentation.
